Plot Summary

After World War II, song and dance men Bob Wallace and Phil Davis form a successful partnership eventually becoming top Broadway producers.  Bob agrees to take in a nightclub act by the Haynes sisters, Betty and Judy, as a favor-so he thinks-for their brother who served with Bob and Phil in the war.  Phil always tries to get Bob interested in a girl, usually one in the show.   When he realizes that Bob is smitten with Betty, he arranges to accompany them to their show at a small Vermont Inn.  Imagine their surprise when they learn that their old commanding officer, Major General Tom Waverly, is the inn’s owner.  The General has sunk his savings and pension into the venture but it has yet to snow and it looks like he’s on the verge of bankruptcy.  They come up with a plan to help the General, but a series of misunderstandings leads to a rift between Bob and Betty leaving it to Phil and Judy to try and get them back together-which, of course, they do.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is a family friendly show appropriate for ages 4 and up.  The show runs approximately 2 hours with one 15 minute intermission.

Into the Woods

Plot Summary

Into the Woods combines bits of the well-known fairy tales — Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood — with the story of the Baker and his Wife who desperately want a child. Unfortunately, the Baker and his Wife have been cursed with childlessness by The Witch and must perform various difficult tasks to break the spell. They enlist the help of the other fairy tale characters to accomplish these tricky tasks which include bringing The Witch a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. After a series of trials and tribulations, the Baker and his Wife finally break the spell. Show Runs June 4-20 in Walnut Creek

Diablo Theatre Company Will Stage a Re-imagined Production of Sondheim Masterpiece ‘Into the Woods’

Diablo Theatre Company’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical fairy tale “Into the Woods,” opening June 4 in Walnut Creek for 12 performances through June 20, is getting a fresh, new “re-imagined” look.

As configured by director Ryan Weible and set designer Mark Mendelson, the on-stage action will take place in an orphanage in the post-market-crash era of the 1930s. As the story unfolds, the orphanage will be transformed through the eyes and imaginations of the orphans into a unique forest.

The show will feature Joanna Gleason, who will be heard but not seen as the voice of the giant. She won a Tony Award for best actress as the baker’s wife in the Broadway production.

“It’s all in keeping with the spirit of Diablo Theatre Company’s mission of ‘re-imagining the classics,’” says Weible. “We’ve returned to ‘The Uses of Enchantment’ by Bruno Bettelheim, which inspired the original musical. One of the main tenets of the text deals with how children project themselves into the fairy tales to help them deal with life’s realities.”

The show’s hit song “Children Will Listen” provides the “perfect context,” Weible says. “By using the stories in the musical, and the orphans to facilitate the storytelling, our audiences will experience how children might envision the characters through the imagination of two new arrivals. Who those new arrivals might be will require a ticket purchase.”

Cheryl Yee Glass, Diablo Theatre Company’s resident music director, will conduct the orchestra. Chad Runyon is the vocal director.

With a cast of more than 20, “Into the Woods” opens June 4 and continues for 12 performances, through June 20, including matinees, one of which on June 12 is scheduled for families. All performances are in the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek. Tickets ($29-$42) are on sale there as well by phone, (925) 943-7469, and online atwww.lesherartscener.org. The family matinee on June 12 begins at 10 a.m. with tickets at $20 for adults and $10 for children. For more information, visit www.diablotheatre.org.

“Into the Woods” runs 2 hours and 45 minutes, including intermission.
